Communication Weaknesses: Will Satellite Phones Work in an Apocalypse / Times of Crisis?

In high-tension scenarios, the integral communication infrastructures such as cell towers and satellites face heightened risks.

Whether through physical damage or digital disruptions, their reliability comes into question during conflict or disaster situations.

Specifically, cell towers can be physically damaged or suffer digital breaches, and satellites may become targets of space or cyber warfare.

Given these susceptibilities, it is crucial to explore alternative communication methods that offer resilience against these vulnerabilities.

Radio frequencies, for instance, present a more steadfast option. Unlike cellular or satellite-based communications, radio waves cannot be as easily disrupted across the board, making them a viable contingency.

Additionally, preparing for such eventualities involves ensuring access to reliable power sources to maintain these alternative communication methods.

Power supplies, such as battery backups or generators, alongside solar panels, provide sustainable off-grid options to keep these systems operational.

Multiple charging methods—solar, vehicular, and standard electric grid—offer flexibility and autonomy in maintaining communication lines during power outages or grid failures.

Implementing solar panels with ease-of-use features, like adjustable stands and robust charging capabilities, can be a practical solution for sustained energy supply.

Individuals should also be prepared to construct protective frameworks for their solar panels to mitigate damage from environmental factors such as wind.

The choice of communication devices, such as ham radios, becomes critical when satellites and cell towers are compromised.

Affordable and available in various forms, these devices operate on reliable frequency bands, and they do not require satellite or cellular networks.

Though licenses are typically required for transmission to regulate frequencies and maintain order, these radios remain operable irrespective of licensing status in emergency settings.

Concerns surrounding battery safety prompt consideration of battery types used in power supply units.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are a safer alternative to lithium-ion batteries, which have been known to be more volatile and less stable in certain conditions.

Trustworthiness of Radio-Based Communication Methods

In an age where digital and satellite technologies face vulnerabilities, the stability of radio frequencies stands out as a constant and reliable means of communication.

Whether in a scenario of conflict or widespread social unrest, radio signals remain persistent because unlike satellite and cellular networks, they are less susceptible to targeted disruptions.

Are Satellite Phones Worth It? In the Wilds vs a Crisis - Summary

Where there is a lack of standard mobile cellular signals, provided there is line of sight to the sky (and no limiting solar flare activity) then a satellite phone is a great choice for maintaining comms whilst out in the wilderness.

When there is a risk of disruption to the satellite network including its ground based elements then you would be well advised to consider alternative means of communication, such as amateur radio systems, compete with a sustainable power source.

Naturally none of us wish the need for the latter, but, as per so many things in life, it is better to be prepared for the need in advance than to need to get prepared after the event.
